Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this train ride offers an unforgettable glimpse into Switzerland’s breathtaking natural wonders.

Starting in Grindelwald: The Alpine Gateway

Nestled at the base of the Eiger mountain, Grindelwald is a charming alpine village known for its outdoor sports, wooden chalets, and panoramic views. It’s a popular destination for hikers, skiers, and photographers alike. Before you hop on the train, take a stroll through the town and enjoy the serene atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and cozy cafés serving Swiss hot chocolate and pastries.

The Grindelwald railway station is well-connected and forms part of the Bernese Oberland Railway (Berner Oberland-Bahn or BOB). From here, you’ll embark on a magical train journey toward Lauterbrunnen — a valley known as one of the most beautiful in the world.

The Route: A Short Ride, Infinite Beauty

The train ride from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen typically takes around 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the route and transfer times at Zweilütschinen, a small junction village where the railway lines split toward either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

The train winds through lush green meadows dotted with wildflowers, glacial rivers, and the towering Alps. As the train snakes its way along the mountainside, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of dramatic cliffs and snow-capped peaks. Keep your camera ready — every twist of the track offers a new perspective worth capturing.

Zweilütschinen: The Scenic Switch

At Zweilütschinen, passengers briefly change trains. Though it’s a quick stop, the scenery here is equally lovely, with the confluence of two rivers — Lütschine from Grindelwald and Lütschine from Lauterbrunnen — giving the village its name, meaning “Two Lütschines.”

You’ll switch to the train heading to Lauterbrunnen, which continues the journey deeper into the heart of the Alps.

Arrival in Lauterbrunnen: The Valley of 72 Waterfalls

As the train descends into Lauterbrunnen, you’ll be greeted by sheer cliffs, green pastures, and cascading waterfalls — most famously, Staubbach Falls, one of Europe’s highest free-falling waterfalls. The village lies in a deep glacial valley, surrounded by rock walls and snowy summits.

Lauterbrunnen is more than just a destination — it’s a doorway to adventure. From here, you can take cable cars to Mürren or Wengen, or continue your ascent to the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe. The area is also rich in hiking trails, alpine flora, and traditional Swiss charm.

Travel Tips

  • Train Frequency: Trains between Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen run frequently throughout the day, often every 30 minutes.
  • Best Season: While the route is stunning year-round, summer (June–September) offers lush greenery and waterfalls, while winter provides a snowy wonderland.
  • Seat Reservations: Not required for regional trains, but try to sit on the right side when departing Grindelwald for the best views.
  • Swiss Travel Pass: This scenic ride is covered under the Swiss Travel Pass, which allows unlimited travel on public transport.
  • Luggage: There’s ample space for suitcases, and stations are equipped with lockers and baggage services.

A Must-Do Swiss Experience

The train journey from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen isn’t just transportation — it’s a scenic masterpiece. With every passing meadow, waterfall, and craggy peak, you’ll be reminded why Switzerland remains one of the world’s most enchanting travel destinations.

Whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer alpine adventure, this route is a must for anyone wanting to witness the majestic Swiss Alps in all their glory — quietly, comfortably, and in classic Swiss style.
