Beijing, China’s vibrant capital, is a city steeped in history, culture, and innovation. From imperial palaces and centuries-old alleyways to futuristic architecture and buzzing food scenes, this metropolis promises a journey through time and tradition. Whether you’re a history buff, culinary explorer, or simply a curious traveler, Beijing offers unforgettable experiences at every turn.

It’s a place where the ancient and modern coexist harmoniously—walk the Great Wall one day, sip tea in a historic hutong the next. Every corner of Beijing invites you to uncover its rich legacy and dynamic present.

Here’s a list of must-visit destinations that capture the city’s diverse spirit:

1. The Great Wall of China

Just northeast of Beijing lies one of the world’s most iconic landmarks—the Great Wall. Popular sections like Mutianyu and Badaling offer breathtaking views and remarkably well-preserved structures. A hike along this ancient fortification offers a glimpse into China’s powerful dynastic past.

2. The Forbidden City
Step into the heart of imperial China at the Forbidden City, the largest palace complex in the world. Once home to Ming and Qing emperors, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dazzles with its intricate carvings, colorful murals, and golden rooftops—a true masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture.

3. Tiananmen Square

Located adjacent to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square is a monumental space that plays a key role in modern Chinese history. It’s home to landmarks like the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the National Museum of China, and Mao Zedong’s Mausoleum.

4. Temple of Heaven
An architectural and spiritual gem, the Temple of Heaven was where emperors prayed for bountiful harvests. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and ancient pine trees, it’s also a great place to witness locals practicing Tai Chi or playing traditional instruments.

5. Summer Palace

A tranquil retreat from the city, the Summer Palace features picturesque lakes, pavilions, and ornate gardens. Take a leisurely boat ride on Kunming Lake or stroll the Long Corridor—lined with more than 14,000 painted scenes—for a serene escape into imperial leisure.

6. Hutongs and Traditional Courtyards
For a taste of old Beijing, wander the narrow alleys known as hutongs. Nabluoguxiang offers a trendy vibe with modern cafes and boutiques, while other hutongs provide glimpses into daily life and centuries-old courtyard homes. A rickshaw ride is a fun way to explore these cultural treasures.

7. Beijing Olympic Park

A symbol of China’s modern ambitions, the Olympic Park hosted the 2008 Summer Games and features striking structures like the Bird’s Nest Stadium and the Water Cube. Visit by day to admire their unique designs—or come at night when they’re beautifully lit for a truly magical view.

8. Lama Temple (Yonghe Temple)
A spiritual haven in the city, the Lama Temple is one of the most significant Tibetan Buddhist temples outside of Tibet. Highlights include the awe-inspiring 18-meter-tall Buddha statue carved from a single sandalwood tree and the temple’s stunning traditional architecture.
